At least 70 people have been declared dead after a truck mowed down people who were watching fireworks celebrations in Nice, France.
France has been on alert for a terrorist attack for months, and officials have warned repeatedly that another attack is likely. Last November, attacks in and around Paris killed 130 people.
Christian Estrosi, the deputy mayor of Nice, confirmed that more than 70 people had been killed. “The truck was full of weapons and grenades,” Mr. Estrosi said on French television. It was not clear what motivated the driver to veer into the crowd.
It is reported that a truck came down speeding and drove straight to a crown of people. Images distributed on social media platforms show scores of dead bodies covered along the street.
There are reports suggesting that after the truck came to a stop, the driver started firing random shots which led to police firing shots that killed him.
